Thing #23 - Twitter and Micro-blogging

Alcanuck's on twitter: http://twitter.com/alcanuck ... who dares to follow me :) I'm following hpllearning's twittering to see what's up with our new website. Not sure if I'll go as far as attempting to twitter from my cell phone - way too expensive and besides, that IM auto complete feature is so annoying!

Honestly ... I'm not too excited by the concept of microblogging. I have not been able to think of any really useful library applications for the concept, although I do have to admit that the way it was used to communicate web updates during the recent launch of our new site was kinda neat. I guess it could be somewhat useful if a group of library staff were able to follow each other's twitters to be informed about everyone's whereabouts. It could look something like:

alcanuck - stuck in snow returning from Martock will be late - 2 hours ago from cell
sj - fetching newspapers - 2 hours ago from web
kws - cursing google site search - 2 hours ago from web
pw - turning on computers - 2 hours ago from web
jm - weeding - 2 hours ago from web
nc - laminating maps - 1hour ago from web
as - banana muffin, yum - 1 hour ago from web
as - reading book reviews - 1 hour ago from web
alcanuck - arrived! Working on SFPs - 50 minutes ago from web
mc - roving meeting, CWS - 45 minutes ago from cell
greebie - dreaming up more "things" - 30 minutes ago from cell
alcanuck - colour printer misbehaving again!!! - 3 minutes ago from web
kws - breakfast - 2 minutes ago from web
alcanuck - hungry already ... - 50 seconds ago from web
alcanuck - compiling stats for kws - 3 seconds ago
nc - sandwich boarding - 1 second ago

Just imagine the awe inspiring potential for micromanaging your staff!

Ok, enough of my facetious attitude. Here are some more serious thoughts on microblogging from HPL's "Other Librarian".
